I love making Liam’s food because of the obvious health reasons (you know exactly what’s in the food you’re making), financial savings (one veggie/fruit goes a long way!), and how creative I can get with each purée. It’s actually a lot of fun to come up with different flavor combinations!
Liam is an excellent eater — although at first we were worried that he preferred fruits to veggies (like a lot more), he eventually started to enjoy veggies just as much. It just took a few days for him to get used to each vegetable’s taste…
It’s amazing to watch him acquire a liking for so many flavors and textures!
I recently introduced a little bit of organic protein (usually blended chicken and turkey) into his diet, and Liam has responded really well to it. It isn’t in all of his foods yet, but we’re getting there slowly but surely. I also love to incorporate spices and herbs to make “boring” foods a little more fun and tasty… so fun to switch it up!
I usually make a big batch to have two fresh purées (it is recommended that fresh pureed homemade baby food be stored no longer than 48 hours, but many food safety authorities say that 72 hour is fine) and some frozen ones for later… Usually for nights when Daddy feeds Liam 😉 (See my post about frozen food trays and other accessories we love!)
So anyway, here are a few fun (and healthy!) combinations to try at home. Feel free to make them more “purée-like” for babies on the lower end of the spectrum (6-8 months) and chunky for older ones!
